The problem of personal identity over time is a philosophical question inaugurated by David Hume in the modern era. What makes us the same person throughout our lives? Is consciousness merely a continuum in time?

 

The series Layer mask is a sequence of handmade collages in which Sabrina Komar works with the gray and white checkerboard pattern typical of the digital editing software Photoshop. Within the project, this pattern becomes not only a technical motif but also a metaphor for a state of being.

 

The latest studies on consciousness determine that the existence of the brain as an organ is a necessary but not sufficient condition for the emergence of the self. Self-awareness or metaconsciousness involves different mental states and neuronal processes interwoven with diverse symbolic and cultural substrates. Different overlapping layers that form a whole greater than the sum of its parts.

 

In her work, she expands and deconstructs the boundaries of genres and mediums with a great sense of experimentation, utilizing a wide range of analog and digital techniques with immense freedom—from archaic photography techniques to digital image modification procedures. This is alongside textile and artisanal techniques, ranging from sewing, cutting, and folding to weaving, through which her works cross the border between photography and fine arts, acquiring a spatial dimension. Her images are self-portraits and interior monologues that fold back in upon themselves.
